![]() My taste in Japanese food lacks sophistication. The more expensive the food I am served, the less I am likely to enjoy it. I am usually happiest with my mother-in-law's home cooking, or in a beer drinking establishment scarfing down grilled fish balls on a stick. That said, here is the bounty that was laid before me. Fortunately, a lot of beer and great sake was also laid before me, so I didn't have to eat it entirely sober. Clockwise from the upper left: 1. empty rice bowl 2. bland, shiny walnut 3. pink, yellow processed fish patty 4. a dozen whole, tiny white minnows suspended in a rectangle of clear gelatin 5. black pickled seaweed 7. some sort of pink pickled vegetable 8. soramame (sky bean) soaked until soft and bland 9. quail egg on a bed of raw ground tuna served with dashi/soy sauce 10. the dashi/soy sauce 11.
